  • Some problems(?) during F150 water pump change

I removed my lower unit without a hitch (thankfully) and took apart the water pump and got everything removed. While looking at the top seal I noticed that one side had a tiny bit of movement.
This is my main concern but I also posted some pictures of other things that might need addressing.

Here is a close up (sorry for the blur)

Also while inspecting other parts I had some concerns. The plastic ring on top of the insert cartridge over the impeller looks chipped.

The inside of the water pump housing looks corroded or pitted.

And finally the metal insert has corrosion on it.

If there's no water in the lower unit then the seals are good...the plastic water pump housing looks like it was run dry and overheated and needs replacement...if the stainless steel cup is warn, corroded or otherwise questionable then replace it also....also the lower wear plate should be replaced....was the motor run without water even for a very short period of time causing overheating?

I really wish they would list part number for all the parts they show in these diagrams.
Why wouldn't they have part numbers for the pump housing.

I never ran the motor without water. I bought the boat used from someone and I firmly believe it was not taken care of at all.

The kit I have has the wear plate and insert but not the housing or the plastic ring that goes over the insert.

That's actually not the seal, rather a "cover" simply sitting on top of the seals:

the seals are pressed into the bearing carrier below. (You can only see the upper)

Per the parts fisch, that first pic, the black "seal" isn't a seal but a cover.

Look close at the pic, the actual seals (TWO) are under there.

They ARE prown to the tension spring (wraps around the seal keeping tension on the drive-shaft) breaking over time.

Check at least the top one and make sure it's there..

Well just replace it all, take your time and do it right and you should be good to go for a year or so, depending on usage....Who knows what the previous owner did or did not do to the motor? Consider replacing the thermostat and pressure control valve at this time also, so you'll know where you're at maintenance-wise....

What is the plastic ring you refer to?

I thought the kit included that and the metal retaining ring?

Nope. Had to check my last order. Had to order those separately.

That issue came up last week. One part of the impeller hardware is not included.

It came up that RB, tried momentarily to remove it, then just forces and replaces it (to save time)..

I think it was the metal retainer. The white plastic ring the OP has, has seen better days...
