F115 Squealing noise.

OK now seem to have the oil pressure warning issue sorted.

Yesterday later in the day I slow down and pull the outboard into neutral and a squealing noise starts. The noise disappeard when I put the motor into gear. I did 3 or 4 more moves and the noise comes and goes but now sometimes it is apparent when the engine is in gear.

The noise sounds like a dry bearing or even a bit like air pressure being let out of a valve ( not sure that is a good description )

I have heard that there is a bearing that can do something like this if the drive shaft is not lubricated when the lower unit is removed/re fitted. I have never experienced this so not sure exactly what it sounds like.

All I hope is it is an easy fix ....... please

Remove the lower unit. Look at the driveshaft just above the water pump. You will note a wear mark. This is where the driveshaft turns within the bushing. Put a dab of Yamaha water resistant grease no. 2 on the driveshaft.

Look up in the mid-section. You will see the bushing. Lube it as well.

I have head its pretty common but after owning 3 yamaha's and a couple of thousand hours this is the first time I have ever heard it.

Are there implications for not attending to it ? Seems people say that is comes and goes in a lot of cases.

The next trip it happened again after I ran to my fishing spot but then went away. A couple of more trip down the road and it has gone away.

So all good now.

Improved replacement parts?

does anyone know if Yamaha has improved the replacement parts of drive shaft bushings in terms of this well established noise problem ?

I would like to get rid of my squeeling noise of F100 -06 (only 80 hours and no salt water use). I have cleaned and lubricated the bushing and the axle by high quality marine vaseline, without any change in the noise. Next I would consider to replace the bushing, but would like to know if the replacement part is any better.. Maybe the inner diameter of the bushing could be slightly bigger to avoid excessive friction! Seems that the current part for F90 (same as F100) is the following:

I'd clean and polish that wear area on the drive shaft with some fine Emory cloth and then use some marine grease to lubricate it. I understand that bushing is a type of oil impregnated bronze and should be fairly trouble free except for some squealing noises occasionally. Many of the motors don't even have that bushing...mostly the larger HP/longer driveshaft and the long foot motors for deep draft boats/sailboats, etc....My C90 doesn't have it....

I tried Marine wheel bearing grease on that bushing. Lasted 6 months, maybe, squeeling came back. (25" shaft, extended LU)

Put in the Yamaha Waterproof Marine grease and your good to go. A tub is less than $10.00.

Thanks for comments. As the lubricating didnīt change the squeeling at all, not even immediately after the lubricating, I doubt that this happens because of the (not best possible) lubricate. I also polished the wear area of the axle. So in my case there would be some problem in the bushing.

Do you know what modifications/improvements Yamaha have done to these bushings? And have they done the same for replacement parts of older models also (such as my F100 -06), not only for the latest models ?

When comparing my F100 -06 and with friendīs F115 -12 (newer), they sound like completely different engines: F100 has much loader squeeling and F115 has no squeel. This despite of the equal operating hours (both have about 80 hours). Therefore I would quess that this problem has been solved somehow in latest F115 models. And hopefully also in replacement parts of older models.

I believe there's a retaining clip up there that must come out. That tool, if you can get it in the should work fine. Clean it real well before installing the new one. Its NOT going to be as anywhere as tight as swapping wheel bearings, etc. (One member had one loose in the mid-section).

I'd probably cut a small circle out of plywood, attach it to a 2"x2" on the end, and just tap it into place.

Also, I cannot say enough, to put the proper Yamaha grease in there. IT DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

Is the number 2 grease used only for the bushings? Can it also be used for the driveshaft splines or do I need to use the marine waterproof grease for that?
