'89 200 Yamaha surging

My motor has started surging all of a sudden right around 4000rpm's, it only fluctuates one or two hundred rpm's but there is a distinct differance in the sound. I can go wide open on the throttle or cut back a little bit and all is fine. Any thoughts as to why this is happening would be greatly appreciated.

Fuel problem is the most likely where it is. clean carbs fuel pumps, filters and check for fuel restrictions in fuel lines.

Thanks for the reply, is it possible that it might be an electricle problem? Stator, power pack, coil?

try runnin it at night and watch coil leads, i had to shrink wrap my pro v leads as they were bleedin out.

I had good spark at the coils so I disasembled and cleaned the carbs, that fixed the problem.
