Hour Meter

I have recently installed an hour meter and have a 2006 Yahama F115 4 stroke. I want to run the time up to be in sync with the time based on the outboard computer... so, can I just leave the key 'on' - will this hurt the on-board computer any, or should I disconnect positive lead on meter and use alligator clips to my battery to run the time up on the meter?

Disconnect the main 10 pin wire harness at engine or disconnect hour meter leads and connect to hour meter to a battery.
