  • F300 and nmea 2000

Are the new F300 outboards NMEA 2000 compliant, I found some reference in the install guide for NMEA 0813 but not the 2K standard, we are trying to understand if we need any extra bits to get the speed info on the square display, do we need to connect a compatable gps unit or does it only work with the optional speed sensor? ( in this case we need to purchase the optional bits ?) many thanks in advance

Yes it is but would need to install a gateway module, part number MAR-GTWAY-ML-09.

        speed input

ok that gateway would be required for a gps nmea 2k compatable, if my gps is already nmea 0183 ( Garmin 525S), then it would connect up directly with the yamaha network without the need for the gateway?,
back to the speed source for the square guages, can they use this external nmea0183 gps as a speed source for speed obviously and fuel ecconomy etc, or do they still need the Yamaha speed sensor, pitot tube etc

You can use the NMEA 0183 output of GPS connected to Command Link(blue and white wire from speedo) to display GPS speed on speedometer. If you want the GPS to display engine data then you will need NMEA 2000 connection to Command Link and will need the Gateway for that connection.

            practical examples

just to take this discussion further did anyone actually try this type of configuration ?
To recap it's a new F300 with a tach and speed/fuel (multi), digital square guages,
what is normally installed as a speed source ? the pitot tube and pressure sensor ( which one guy tells me does not exist for the F300 models) or an external paddle wheel "speed over water" sensor ?
our intention is as I said earlier to use the Garmin 525S nmea 0183 output.
I would have liked to get a nmea 2000 gps antenna but then I would need the nmea 0183 to 2000 gateway which could be a more costly solution.
            Thanks in advance
