What year is my Outboard Motor?

I just purchased a 200 Yamaha. I was told it was a 1998 yet on arrival it looks like a 1988. The seller said the motor was from out of the USA and although it looks like a 1988 model it is a commercial or scaled down 1998. Am I crazy to believe this story.

If the model numbering system holds true outside the States as well as inside, then I calculate the motor as a 1990 vintage. Could be wrong on this - wait for more replies.
