Rodents ate through the ten-pin main wire harness and the eight-"pin" gauge wire harness on my Sanpan pontoon boat.
The ten-pin harness was not difficult to get. The 16 foot harness I bought for about 80 dollars and installed it fine.
But the gauge harness was another story. The Yamaha dealer I went to first ordered what they thought was the replacement. The part number was 6Y5-83653-00-00. The cost was 38 dollars. However, it was a four wire harness, with different colored wires from the original. The connectors were the same.
To make a long story short, I finally went to the dealer where I bought the boat. The Parts guy knew what I wanted, and looked in back for the right harness- an eight wire harness with two four-pin connectors on each end. He found it, but it wasn't in its own bag with the part number marked. He somehow looked up the part number in the Yamaha "rigging" book (which the first place didn't use), and was surprised to find that the price was 175 dollars.
I went in the next day with the remnants of the original, and looked at it. It was definately a match. I had no choice but to pay 175 dollars, but made the sales guy note on the receipt that it was a single 8 wire harness.
Now, my thinking is that this 8 wire harness was not in its own packaging because it was part of a multi-harness pack. The rest of the harnesses were used, leaving the 8 wire. So the 175 dollar cost includes at least one other harness- probably the ten pin. At least that's my theory.
The "part" number given me was 68F-82553-70-00 Extension, Wire lead 238.
Now, if the 8 wire harness was in its own pack with the number stamped on it, I guess I would have to suck it up.
But the 8 wire harness 20 feet long, at 175 dollars, seems extremely high given that a 4 wire harness 20 feet long- the same type of connector and wire-was only 38 dollars.
So who knows about these things and can shed some light on the situation?
Thanks in advance.
Steve
