'05 f25 tiller

I am having problems with reverse on my outboard. It will go in gear but you have to hold it. If i apply a tiny bit of pressure it clicks badly

It could be shift linkage adjustment or shift shaft union nut at lower unit installed wrong. Could be a problem inside gearcase, hard to say.

it sounds like the grinding noise is coming from the gear case but i am not 100% positive. Is there some kind of adjustment in the gear case

No there is no adjustment in gearcase. If the lower has been removed and not reinstalled properly(shift shaft nut) then it may be shifting properly.
