  • water pump/impeller problem

    1998 40hp 2 stroke I'm looking to buy:

    Motor looks great
    very clean
    starts up and runs good

its not pumping water through, could this be anything other then the water pump or impeller?

i got a quote for $200 for a new water pump. Looking at the assembly drawings of the motor it seems the whole water pump impeller assembly seems pretty straight forward.

Has anyone done this on their own?

the warning light is on which im assuming is just because its not pumping water through, but the manuel says it could also indicate a oil pump problem.

the other thing is there is a little bit of oil on the prop... i don't think thatd be anything major but i dunno.

Any thoughts would be well appreciated i'm thinking of taking it in for a tune up for $160 to get it all checked out, just wondering if any of this sounds like major problems or expensive ones.

Any input or thoughts would be appreciated as I'm looking to purchase this week. thanks

It would be a good idea to check compression(since no water is pumping, may have overheated) and check lower unit for leaking seals(may have water in gearcase).
