  • 1994 Yamaha 50 power loss...now no spark

Motor ran great all day, but when running down River at end of outing, I developed power loss at WOT. Engine would stumble badly. If I backed down to 4000-4800 rpm all seemed ok. Back up to over 5000 stumbled again. Switched fuel tanks...same thing. I ran another mile at 4000 ok.Then started stumbling at even lower rpms. I turned engine off...started and repeated problem.

I let it rest while fishing for thirty minutes. Started right up. Got on plane to 5200 rpm... twenty seconds later it stumbled. This time I did not back off throttle and it died. I never could restart (luckily only thirty yards from ramp)!

Got home and pulled plugs...I have no spark. Kill switch is in place.

Motor was rebuilt and carbs and waterpump etc. back in March (coils, wires, etc. all original). It had been running perfectly until as I described.

    Any ideas?

Thank you for the replies. I forgot to mention I sucked up a lot of leaves (it's an outboard jet) just before this happened, and had to stop several times and pull the leaves off the shoe. To do this I tilt the motor up by hand. I wonder if I jostled something.

I'll post back when I discover the culprit.

Thanks again, I've learned plenty just reading previous posts on this site and searching the archives.
