  • Lower unit grease nipple function?

    On my 1995 Yamaha (L) 250TXRT, 76 deg V6

I removed the grease nipple on the lower unit bearing housing (it was not taking grease), and found that the grease supply routed to the outside, rather that inside to the bearing as I had expected. Why would there be a need to supply grease to the interface between the bearing housing OD and the lower unit case? (vibration damping? exhaust leakage sealing?

I was not able to get this grease circuit to flow after much cleaning and chasing with a wire. I need to know if I should attempt to remove the bearing housing to further investigate this plugged grease circuit or not worry about it. Another oberservation, though likely unrelated is that the lower unit oil was found to be very black and foul smelling, on changing. No sign of water leakage or oil break down however.

I'm not sure but I think it keep the salt from building up.

It is put in there for ease of bearing carrier removal. There is a grove in the carrier. If there is greae in the grove it helps keep the carrier from seizing to lower unit case.
