At longer periods of idle in gear--forward or reverse--over 2 minutes---I get the overheat alarm in the control. As soon as I run the rpm up --it cools off and stops the alarm--In neutral at 1600 rpm for the rev up and the engine cools. It is shooting water out the side--but not real strong at idle. In fact it had the alarm go off when I was flushing it in my driveway yesterday.
Is this really as simple as the water pump impeller? Or bad sensor that is going off to early?? This engine was just rebuilt by a Yamaha authorized dealer and lower end gone thru--I would figure that they would have done a new water pump impeller, maybe I am taking things for granted here?? Is the impeller replacement about the same as other outboards like OMC or Merc outboards? I only use these words as I have worked on both and replaced impellors on many models.
