I have a yamaha outboard 40VETOL (1998) I would like to know how to put down the rpm`s when the engine is in Neutral.RPM in neutral are to high and when I want to put in reverse gear it won`t jump in the gear smoothly. What can I do?

    Thanks in advance.

p.s. sorry for not perfect english

unhook the throttle cable then you need to get motor to idle down around 700 rpms.
look at the carb linkage for a set / stop screw, to adjust and see if you can drop the rpms....i couldnt find a linkage diagram for the 40`s.

IF you DO get it to idle down with that adjust, then you will need to also adjust the cable end to accomodiate the new linkage position.

I try to find the screw to adjust the RPM`s but I didn` find it.I don`t know wich one is the correct as the engine have 3 carburators, does exist just one screw to adjust rpm or there are 3? Where is usualy placed?
        Thanks.
