fuel sender readout 99 0x 250

my ox 250 1999 readout for the fuel level doesnt work/ it flashes empty/ i hooked up a new tempo guage and unit separate and it works fine/ i usually hook up the red wire fronm the tank sender to the white lead and on my other yammies the guage on the yamaha worked / ground is good and contacts are good/ probably the guage i guess / advise am i hooking it up wrong
