Yamaha 85 AET 1982 model ran well. Switched off to catch the big one. Would not start again. Swings healthy but refuses to fire.I have checked the cut-out switch, no problem. Even removed the white cut-out wire on the left hand side of CDI. Still no luck. Checked for spark whilst swinging. No spark. 1)How can I test the CDI? 2)Also does anyone know how to build/repair my own CDI as our agents charge me R4300-00 (about $650-00 US)for a new one. 3)What does the unit with the heat sink above the CDI do? (The one that has the fuse at the top).

There really is no test for the CDI itself nor can it be repaired, the service manual may give a set of resistance values for CDI but in my opinion they are unless. It can fail resistance test and still good. You can test pulsor coil, charge coil and ign coils. I dont any any specs on that model engine so I can't give the values. On the models here in US the voltage regulator is mounted above the CDI box.
