I have a 2000 F100 and recently have noticed that the battery indicator on the digital speedometer gauge will start blinking. At startup and with idling it reads ~13 then with operating at higher speeds increases to 16.4 to 16.8. The manual only mentions a problem if this reading is too low. Is there too much current coming from the alternator? Thanks for any help.

The voltage across your starting battery should not go above 14.6 volts.
I would monitor the voltage with a digital voltmeter to confirm what the digital gauge is reading. Just measure across the battery terminals.
If the voltmeter reads the same, then you most likely have a faulty rectifier/regulator assembly.
Good luck ,
