  • Update on 1988 40 HP saga

Please see "can't get lower unit off" by drmarke ~ pg4.
Well bought rebuilt lower unit - $400.00
Bought water pump rebuild kit - can't recall$
Had to drill out "broken bolts" on lower unit.
(tried every extractor and torch known to man)
    Perma-coils and tap - $40
Marine grease, antisieze, stainless bolts, etc - $40
Placed and removed Lower Unit 6-7 times (First time took 3 hours +/- as Perma-coils were not correctly centered. (considered putting in permanant studs and replacing lower unit over these and securing with washers and lock-nuts; But I figured the studs would have been too long and same problem .
    Impeller key slipped off once.
Grease clogged water tube (too much grease LOL and I thought the key slipped out again).
Last time replaced lower unit and rebuilt water pump in less than 30 min!
Decided carbs needed cleaning, broke off drain plug on lower carb *need drain plug*
Checked thermostat when water wasn't coming out of block (trashed) * need thermastat*
Cleaned and checked fuel filter (looks great!)
Prop being returned from shop tommorow.
Took out big boat several times and had a blast!
