  • Yamaha 150 fuel issue (I think)

Several years ago I bought an old Bomber 202 bass boat with a 150 hp Yamaha engine. At that time it ran great. At the beginning of 2011, I put the boat into storage and did not get it out until a few months ago. With work, I never had the time to get it out. I took it to an authorized repair facility to give it a good once over and they rebuilt the carbs and replaced the hoses on the engine itself. They tested it in their shop and said it ran like a charm.

When I got it back to my place I tried to crank it but could not. I looked under the transom and found the fuel lines were not hooked up. Upon calling them they said that they did not hook them up because the tanks needed to be purged and to prevent me from running the motor prior to purging they left the lines this way. I replaced one of the fuel lines from a tank as it was clogged however the other fuel line from the other tank appeared to be ok. I filled each tank with fuel and pumped each tank dry thinking this would be sufficient. Neither tank could be removed from the hull. Filled both tanks up with a can of Seafoam in each tank.

I took it out on the lake yesterday and it cranked right up. In neutral I could get up to about 3200 rpm for a time or two and it sputtered. In gear, however, I was able to get to about 2300 rpm once, for about 5 minutes, and was able to plane out and it still did not seem to get to full power. After that, it generally would not get above 1200 rpm. It always seemed to be sputtering. I switched from one tank to the other. This second tank was the tank that I had replaced the fuel line on. My thinking was that surely if the problem was a clogged fuel line then this tank would allow the motor to run better. Using the second tank I could not get it to crank at all. I switched back to the first tank and limped back to the dock and brought it back home.

What should I do to completely flush the fuel system? Does it sound like more problems than just the fuel system?
