  • F150 torque isssue

    Hi Guys,

I have an 05 F150 TXRD. It runs good except that it seems really lacking in torque. Its on an Aquasport osprey bay 205 which is a pretty heavy boat with a 19p prop.

It takes about 7 (maybe as much as ten with a loaded boat) seconds to plane. Is there anything I can do to find out if there is some thing off?

It starts great, it doesn't miss or stumble during accel, and runs about 45mph or so at top speed. but like I said the torque just seems off

    Any thoughts, thanks in advance!

    what is the WOT RPM?

Seems way over propped IMO. Looking at other similar boats it appears that a Reliance 15" pitch might be desirable. Or with less pitch.

With the boat loaded, the engine wide open and trimmed only to the point of maximum efficiency (and no more) the motor should be able to turn at or near 6000. Not only will it be sluggish, but too much propeller can be the early death of a motor.

I think it was about 5600 or so, but I can't remember so I could be wrong about that. What should it be? I know I can cruise at about 30mph at 3500rpm which I really like.

Boscoe already said 6K, but you both posted at the same time.

You need to be sure what wot RPM is with the normal load you run .

You prop a Yamaha to reach at or near its red line RPM with the boat loaded.

You then cruise at whatever RPM you choose.

The red line on the F150 is 6000 RPM.

So am I ok to run it at 6k to figure this out? Does it have a rev limiter?

Yes you can run it at 6K with no problems.
and it should have a rev limiter a little higher than that.
But we are thinking you are not going to get that high if loaded normal.
when loaded lite and you get above 6k you need to back off the throttle some

most people do not run a WOT except to jump up on plane and then they back down to normal comfortable cruising speed.
they tend to burn too much fuel at WOT to keep that up for long.

but you need to find out what RPM is for sure when selecting the correct prop
