  • Remote tilt and trim switch stopped working

    Hello all
Tilt and trim on Yamaha 2004 70 hp remote control box Yamaha 704 stopped working. Switch on motor does work fine but nothing from remote switch on control box. Unscrewed handle looked at switch looks fine all three wires connected to switch red ,light green ,and light blue. Do these switches go bad or should I look elsewhere for the problem.
Anybody have this issue before ? Any help is welcomed. Thanks
    Vic

Often, the contacts inside the switch get some corrosion on them..

I would first spray the switch, while rocking it, with some penetrating oil before
digging deeper. That'll often loosen up any green in there....

More than likely it is the switch. Did you test the switch with a multimeter?

After being out in the elements for 10 or so years they do fail. The switch itself has been updated a time or two to try and better its reliability.

Thanks for the quick replies . To check with multimeter I would be looking for current between red and green and red and blue respectively while switch is rocked between up and down is that correct ? Will also try penetrating spray but honestly when Looking at the switch it looks brand new no evidence of corrosion visible but of course can't see inside. Thanks again.

Soak it good, the contacts are pretty small (T&T go thru a relay). It will very likely save you buying a new switch.

As a side note, my engine mounted trim switch started acting up about a year ago (only operating in one direction). Sprayed it up good (didn't even un-plug it), still working fine...

Here's a pic of my sealed starter relay contacts that got arced up and failed over time. (took 15 minutes cutting this apart as it was so stout to get to the contacts). And this IS the relay taking the brunt of the voltage:

Should be an easy fix. Which wires could he connect or jumper to show connectivity with the relay at engine? I have never taken my switch apart.

How bout that Hillary Nixon today !!??

The relay at the engine is two separate coils, each already grounded.

The green wire from the switch goes to one coil,
the blue to the other coil.

If 12v+ is supplied to either the blue or green wire,
the respective coil should close the relay contacts and run the motor

An easier way may be to go under the control box and find the red, green and blue wires. Disconnect them.

Plug the blue wire into the red wire. Motor should trim up.

Plug the green wire into the red wire. Motor should trim up.

If plugging the two wires into the red wire cause the motor to trim up and down, but the switch won't do it, then the switch is kaput.

That switch, particularly early versions, one of which you have given the age of your motor/control box, were known to fail prematurely. The switch has been updated several times.

                            politics, like life, is complicated.

certainly Nixon, by all accounts, was a "crook", and in many ways a terrible person.

                            But - he:
                            restored relations with China
got nuclear arms control agreements with the USSR
established the EPA and OSHA, and signed the Clean Air Act
got us out of Viet Nam!

we have a lot to be thankful to him for....

Too bad he did not re-establish ties with Cuba. About the only thing that I agree with Barack on. If we can get along with Russia, China and Vietnam what's the deal with Cuba?

Now if we can only start working on stopping all of these wars that we have started and which don't seem to be working. War on poverty, war on stupidity, war on drugs. Man the USA likes to be at war.
