My tach for my 90 Yamaha jumps straight to 7k rpms once motor is started and idling. It is a older Yamaha gauge with orange numbers and indicator. It was working last summer with no problems..... what do I need to check first?

1987 90 Yamaha Tach Troubles

Probably a corroded or loose wiring connection on the back of tachometer or in line fuse or wiring from motor.....if those don't fix it then find that small slot head screw on the back and with the motor running move the screw back and forth between it's 3 or 4 different positions and watch the tachometer while doing so....moving that screw back and forth can sorta clean a bad contact on inside of tachometer....if the tachometer is old it may need replacement. I've replaced the tachometer once on my 1999 C90 Yamaha so they do die after a while. Good Luck!
