  • 150 HP Idle Issue

Any help would be appreciated with the following problem.

I have a 2005 150 HP Yamaha carburated motor. I recently rebuilt (cleaned) the carbs due to poor running conditions. Rough idling, surging and unable to reach full RPM.

After rebuild/cleaning the carbs, motor now runs great at all rpms except at idle. The motor seems to starve for fuel at idle up to about 1100 rpms. When it begins to stall if I momentarily hit the choke it begins to run smoothly for a couple of minutes then slowing begins to die out until I hit the choke again momentarily.

Did I miss something when I cleaned the carbs or could be it something else.

    Any help/advice would be appreciated.

I have the same motor , a yr older, did you thoroughly clean the carbs? Drill out the non tamper plugs covering the screws on the idle circuit ? Only way to really clean them is to drill them out , remove them, and clean passages . You can either use a left handed drill bit ( small ) or a right handed bit , right on the side of the plug . I hope that helps , let us know

Since your carbs were gummed up the idle adj screw was probably set at a different setting verse now the carbs are not gummed up. So long as you've tuned in the proper mix, try resetting your idle adj screw. Once engine is warm, with engine running, turn out screw until engine idle starts to sputter. Then turn screw in until engine reaches the idle rpm spec.
