  • 2006 F90TXR Tilt Not Going Down

    1) The unit tilts up just fine but not down. While holding the DOWN switch, it will go down easily if I push on it. If the UP-DOWN switch is not pushed then it is locked firmly in place (like it should be).

    2) When it does work going down, there seems to be a "pop" as it transitions from high speed to slow speed. Almost as if it were binding for a split second.

Any idea as to what's going on here and how to repair? Thanks in advance.

sounds like something is in a mechanical bind.

Has all the grease fittings around the tilt tube be lubricated on a regular basis?

There's not much else there to bind up. In any case, put a grease gun on (with marine grade grease) all grease fittings and pump till you see it come out the sides.

Working the unit up and down while doing this would probably help as well..

Also, make sure you have a little bit of Yamaha Marine grease on the tilt and ram shafts, especially by the cylinder seals.

The seals like the lubrication and will quiet it down quite a bit if never done(or its been awhile)..

Mine were squeeking a bit yesterday, a touch of grease, nice and quiet...

The problem turned out to be metal parts (spring and ball) where they shouldn't be. After the engine was tilted up and down a few times the ball hammered the tilt piston in several places (see pictures). The edge of the piston was smashed and that led to binding. It also damaged the cylinder.

Thanks to Rodbolt for his advice on how to extract the cylinder from the body. (Use hydraulics to pump it out.) And thanks to all who contribute to this forum.

that sucks, but thanks for posting.
I never would have thought that would be the problem.
Did not think the balls and springs could come out unless someone has had this apart before and failed to get it all back together properly

Thanks for the update. Haven't seen that before.. Congrates on finding it..

Rodbolt, how is it possible for those check balls to come out?

Would that spring have failed and allowed them out?

Although it's 10 years old, this unit has never been apart before.

See what Rodbolt has to say.

Obviously, those balls got loose somehow, something failed...

                    cant open the pics.
however the 6 balls will beat a groove in the cyl.
trailering it accelerates the issue UNLESS you use a trailer device on the tilt ram.
I am not a big fan of the single ram design yet that's what we have.
