  • Tilt stop lever doesn't retract

    Re: F90TLR, 2006

By "tilt stop lever" I refer to the flip-up support lever that will bear the weight of the motor in the tilted position.

This mechanism has a spring on the inside of the motor cowling that keeps it in the retract position.

On my motor, when the mechanism is retracted it only returns to about half the distance that it should. This issue doesn't allow the motor to tilt down smoothly, in the final position, like it should but comes down in a ****ing motion.

Either the spring is not the correct spring or the spring is not adjusted properly. I look in the manual and don't see anything that would help me.

    Any ideas?

Binding up would be my 1st guess so spring will not move it

Spray the mechanism with a lubricant like WD-40 to loosen up that corrosion stuck hinge pin....

You should be able to easily and smoothly rotate the lock into and out of position by turning the lock lever.

I believe the spring is intended to hold the lever in one position or the other after it is placed into a position, but not necessarily to return it to a position.

The trailer lock can become bent if and when a boat is trailered with the uplock holding the motor in place. If it is binding then either it needs a bit of lubricant or it has become damaged. Or maybe the spring has become detached from the spring hook.

What manual are you looking in? The owner's manual will not provide much information. Probably best to inspect the parts catalog.

B99...the tilt stop lever (TSL) rotates freely and is not binding. When the TSL is released it doesn't come all the way back to the neutral position. It comes about half way back. If it came all the way back there wouldn't be an issue.

This causes a problem when the T/T is deployed to the vertical position. For about the last 30degs from vertical the not fully retracted TSL catches on the motor mount that's connected to the transom. This causes a ****ing motion for those last 30degs.

On the diagram the spring is 26 which connects to 23. The other end of 26 connects to 24, 25 (it's a clip mechanism). When the TSL is in the half way position there is virtually no tension on the spring. I think there should be tension always on the TSL.

The real solution is if I want to eliminate this issue what I need is to have the TSL to retract all the way back rather than half way. From my investigation there's no way to adjust the spring for the TSL to get it to properly retract.

Not sure what to do...any comments?

If you turn the lever completely one way or the other does the other side not follow?

Yes. The lever moves freely, doesn't bind but only returns about half way. If the lever returned all the way than the issue would be solved.

Sounds like spring is too long or stretched.
When it half returns is the spring loose? If not lubricate every point in the system as it seems the cam affect is restricted.

Maybe the lever or the pin is bent, causing the bind....was the boat/motor trailered using the tilt up lever?... Maybe the bouncing up and down during trailering bent the mechanism?....

Not an uncommon problem at all. OP needs to get down on his knees and inspect the motor to find the problem. Only so much we can guess from a distance.

Yamaha cautions to only use the tilt lock device for holding the motor up when the boat is not moving. This is from the FAQ section at their website. The owner's manual says the same.

Can I use the Tilt Support Lever for transporting my Yamaha outboard?

No. The Tilt Support Lever is to be used only for storage purposes. The Tilt Support Lever was not designed to withstand the strain of transport and could break causing damage to the Tilt Support Lever and/or other bracket components. Yamaha now offers an accessory for transporting called “Outboard Trailering Support.” Learn more about the Outboard Trailering Support, as it is not designed to be used with every model. There are also many aftermarket companies that provide “wedges” or “transom savers” that can offer a solution for your transportation needs. Please make sure that whatever aftermarket component you use is designed to work specifically with your model Yamaha outboard. You can review “Storage and Transportation” instruction in your Owner’s Manual. You can find this information in the Maintenance section.

if the tilt lever it moving freely but you can not move it by hand to the position you want it to go to, then it is hitting something that is keeping it from moving farther or it is binding up.

you are the only one that can look at it unless you take it to someone

that's some fussy little assembly of bits - I'm glad I have no need to mess with it....

clearly the spring is a non-issue - that only comes into play when the eccentric arm is at either end of its travel

                        here's a video of mine:

Good job with the video. Clearly shows the spring is just to hold the levers in one position of the other once the cam gets past dead center.

Maybe I am reading the OP's messages wrong by thinking that he is thinking that the spring is there to actually move the levers. With the spring in place or not there, one should be able to swing the levers from the stowed position to the deployed position. Which apparently he is unable to do. So, somethin' be broken.

Just need to figure out what it be and fix it. Easier said than done however.

It could just be the way I am reading what was originally written, but it sounds like the spring is stretched out and it won't "pull" the support bracket/lever back down into it's "unused" position all the way. Unless there's more to this that I'm not picking up, it seems very simple - either stretched spring or broken spring. Get 'yer head down in 'der and takes a looks!

Boscoe you reported that Under no circumstances trailer with OB only supported by these bracket.
Granted that has been the advice since the beginning of time.
Personally I only rely on this pin and the ram when I travel and have never had a problem.
I first had a decent size OB in 1978 (merc 115) and many Yamahas since travelling many many kilometres.
Maybe I am a good driver ( no accidents for 50 years) but not all the roads are smooth over here.
The point is also that the engines are hardly being held up by these two mechanisms being balanced over the transom.
Have I just been careful or lucky?
I tend to frown apon poor skills.
