I'm sure this question has been asked a thousand times before however I'm about to sell my 2001 F115 4 stroke and would like to know the hours so far, I took it to a local dealer who connected the engine to a Laptop and has advised that the Engine idle speed is the hours run 679 which I find questionable since this would be about the right idle speed. I understand that there may be some special harness and software required to determine the correct figures, any assistance would be most welcome, thanks.

You can buy the software and the interface cable and see for yourself.

The dealer should have provided you with a print out of the hours as a function of engine RPM. Call them and see if they downloaded and saved your engine data to their PC. If so, they can print the data and give it to you. It is an excel file so possibly they can email it to you.
The page you want will look like this:

The way I read what your "mechanic" told you, as the hours increase, so does your idle speed?? are you sure that's what he said? By that silly information, in theory, when new (0 hours) the motor would not idle, and as the years went by, it idles faster and faster.... I think you may have misunderstood what they said?

I see the OP as saying that the total engine run time on his motor just happens to be equal to the idle RPM.
Engine idles at 679 RPM. Hours on the motor are 679.
But then maybe I don't really understand either. If this is what is being said then it is one hellava coincidence.

What Bosco said about YDS. I request such a print out at each service (at an extra cost) and while the dealer probably told the OP the correct information as to the total hours, it was not really useful information for making an engine purchase decision for a knowledgeable purchaser - which most of us are not. Usually the only data given a purchaser is the total hours - nothing about the time at various RPM ranges which could be useful. I suggest you give your purchaser one number and be done with it.
