while running full speed today with my 2013 Yamaha 250 with fly by wire controls I inadvertently shifted from full speed to reverse. The engine shut down and would not restart for about 20 minutes. Eventually restarting, my question is; is it possible I did damage?

Possible? Yes.
Likely? Hopefully not.
The DEC con*****ed motor has self preservation built into itself to try and prevent damage when this happens.
I have not a clue as to why your motor shut down and would not restart for a period of time.
If it runs fine now I would suspect that no damage occurred.

very possible
does it idle smooth with no clicking noise?
that motor has a tendancy to pull water and bend rods if slowed down rapidly.

How did it act when it would not start for 20 minutes?
IF the motor acted like it was locked up and would not turn when starter engaged, then you could have very well got water into a cylinder and bent a rod
