  • Head gasket replacement

i have a 1985 115hp model etxk. I am replacing the cylinder head. I have the gasket, but am not sure if I need to use adhesive or not. The Clymer manual says not to unless specified. Anyone know for sure?

What does Clymer know about rebuilding a Yamaha? You are using the wrong book.

The applicable Yamaha service manual will tell you precisely what to do. Initial torque values, torque sequence, subsequent torque values, position of the gasket, sealant for the head bolts, etc.

if using the OEM Yamaha gasket, no sealent on the gasket.
      if using aftermarket, call them.

It is an OEM. Thanks for confirming!

I typically wipe the bolt threads with pipe sealent with Teflon PST or perfect seal.

            To counteract loosening from vibration?

but let Rod post to make sure

corrosion and we may wish to take it off again someday.

Is it bad to use Antiseize - the one for stainless steel bolts?
I.E. it has no thread locking properties at all.

anti seize with nickel is ok. never use silicone or asny copper based stuff.

Well I got to reassemble the engine this weekend. I was a little obsessed with getting the mating surfaces as clean as possible. A helicoil for one broken head bolt, PTFE Permatex and the proper torquing, a few cranks and it started right up! No leaks too.

Thanks to everyone for the help!
