  • revs way too high in neutral

    1992 - Yami 9.9 ESHQ 2 stroke

As stated, the motor screams neutral. If I pull the choke half way out, it settles down fine and goes into gear. Then it runs fine with choke pressed back in. It was suggested that I clean the carb. However, as I looked it over last night, I'm wondering if this could be a choke adjustment?

Take a look at the video in this link (apologies if there's an ad) https://imgur.com/a/NiApNyE

My regular mechanic has no time and I'm no wrencher, but it seems the problem is in the choke mechanism vs carb.

    any input is appreciated

    thanks

have you looked at the throttle linkage and butterfly to see if it is closing off to the idle position?

I have not - I will have to poke around to find it and check condition ( did i mention not a wrencher - trying to learn......thanks

also check to make sure the timing plate is moving with throttle goes back to idle.
I am not sure what adjusts the timing on that old motor, but timing being too far advanced can get the RPMs up without moving the throttle plate on the carb

Thanks everyone - i went to tinker last night and found the problem right away. See in this pic (https://imgur.com/a/D1Myiip) the screw that I circled - I gave it a quick twist forward and backward and the rod that goes through it, 'popped' free - it seems it was stuck in an 'open' position. Sorry I don't know the names of these things. Motor ran fine after that. I'm off to look at the schematic to see what the parts are called, i'll order replacement should this happen again.
