  • Hurricane Sandy, ID sunk motors ?

Thinking about replace my old 1992 200, due to rusted steer arm. I was wondering how to avoid getting one of theses motors that went in the water during the hurricane. Are there any sure signs that would suggest a water damaged engine and wires? Thanks.

If it sat underwater (especially salt water) for ANY lenth of time and was NOT pulled apart immediatly and cleaned with FRESH water, hosed down with WD40, etc, it likely won't run anyway (if even turn over)

As busy as they were up there then, I have to doubt many marina's were doing emergency fixes for underwater engines.

Like buying any engine, a leak down test is mandatory, a visual under the cowl will show corrosion, checking the oil, draining the carbs, etc should yield some important information.

I would NOT buy it sight unseen or unchecked by a trusted mechanic.

If your engine is good short of the steering arm, would it be worth fixing that? You already know what you have.

Good luck and please post what you come up with.
