  • hour and trim gauge install 2015

    hey guys

I just picked up a 2015 alumacraft with 175hp yamaha 4 stroke. i ordered the pro series 2 trim and hour meter gauges from a shop and i think he said some new harness would be needed

    my questions are these

Will i have to route anything back to the motors or are the pigtails or new harness up front likely to just have plug and play for these. i dont see any unused connectors back at the motor so i assume its just a harness or pigtail under dash?

my other question is up behind my ignition key the wires coming off of that unit there is an unused red lead. any idea what that is for. gauges i have now are fuel. volts. speedo. tach.

any help on these installs would be awesome!!

    thanks

If the warning lights on the tachometer work, then the trim & oil harness (6Y5-83653-XX-00 from the motor to the gauges) should already be in place. If not, you will have to obtain one.

The red wire from the ignition switch, and/or the mini fused harness to the gauges, is for anything that needs battery power.

warning lights on tach? right now i have an analog alumacraft tach which also has a built in fuel or volt gauge on the same dial face. i am not sure what you mean by warning light in that case.

if no warning light should i be seeing an empty connector back at the motor to plug in that special oil / trim harness or is the connector likely somewhere up near the dash for it??

      thanks for the help!!!

It seems to me that you have a tachometer that does not have warning lights. And neither did the boat come with a trim gauge. If so, then I seriously doubt that you will have a harness installed that will feed a signal to the trim gauge.

If the Yamaha trim & oil harness is not installed then there will be a connector in the engine pan. That connector has a pink wire going to it, together with three other wires of a different color. The pink wire carries the trim information.

The connector is shown in the diagram that I provided. It may or may not have a cap on it.

on thank you i think i found the unused 4 pole plug in the engine it had rubber cap in it. it actually has a few pink wires one solid one with green pink and another w like brown / pink. it is the only 4 wire plug i see.

any ideas also how to wire in the hour meter so only runs when motor is running? thanks!!!

What type of hour meter? Certain Yamaha meters run whenever the key is on. Others will run only when the key is on and the motor is on.

gauge is pro series 2. is that Empty red lead off the ignition switch key on power or ignition? sorry for the ignorance but i am clueless with wiring.

Red is battery power. Yellow is key on power. The hour meter should be connected to key on power.

Connect it as per the one on the left if you only want it to run when the key is on AND the motor is running.

                  thanks so much.

so my tac gauge has a spare post that says ign. can i run the green lead from the hour meter to that post on the tac for engine run time metering?

*** thanks for all the help i almost have the gauge install done but one more issue......

i do not have a yamaha tac and it looks like according to the diagram the connector for the trim/oil harness is built into the yamaha tac?

am i gonna need the yamaha tac for this part or if i am just wanting the trim info and dont care about the warning oil light etc can i just tap into the pink wire coming to the gauge unit or something and use the black green and yellow leads as per normal?

looks like my trim oil connector has following wire colors
                      pink
                      gray
                      green
                      green w red stripe

                      thanks!!!

                        ps!!!!!

ok heres what i am thinking.

instead of getting a yamaha tac to solve the no gauge side trim oil harness connector issue

so i dont care about the oil pressure / overheat warning lights on yamaha gauge.
as my aluma gauge just is purely a tac and volts gauge.

if i run the 4 prong trim sender from motor as normal but at dash i cut the pink wire and run this to my trim gauge pink lead and just put the waterproof plug in the connector end up in the dash will this work and be safe or are there other leads in that trim oil harness that are used to make the gauge work??

any ideas on the four wires from the trim oil harness?

i assume pink has trim info
green and red maybe red warn
                          green green oil light?
                          what about grey?

                          thanks
