  • Fuel issue 1985 Yamaha 115 ETLK

    I am having a fuel issue that I am not sure how address. The fuel lines are clear all the way through the fuel filter and to the pump, but I have fuel squirting out of the back side of the fuel pump every time I squeeze the bulb. The harder I squeeze the bulb the farther the gas squirts out, this is not just a drip or two. I was told that this indicates a carburetor float issue that will not allow gas into the carb. Is this correct or is this a cracked or broken fuel pump?

    I can get the motor to start briefly by squirting gas into the carburetor with a quick shot of starting fluid. After turning the engine over the fuel bulb is soft so I am not sure if that is correct.

    Any information or advice that you can provide will be greatly appreciated. Do I need the carburetors cleaned and rebuilt or is this directly related to the fuel pump?

    fuel leaking out of pump is no good.
    that needs attention and the carbs too if it will not start and run properly

      Sounds like you've got a tear/hole in your fuel pump diaphragm....new pump is about $50....easy to replace. The diaphragms won't last forever...maybe replace pump every 5 years or so...if the old one is still good then keep it for an emergency spare...

        Thanks for the response. So the information that I received about the weep hole in the side of the fuel pump to relieve pressure is incorrect? Looking at the pump, there seems to only be only 2 bolts that hold it in place with the in and out lines for gas. I am assuming that this is a mechanically driven pump as there aren't any wires leading to it. Is there anything special that I should know about it before buying and replacing it?

        While looking at the way it was connected I got a better view of it and it actually looks like it is cracked from front to back (outside to the block). Any idea what may have caused something like that?

          The diaphragm operated pump is operated through a small port by the alternating pressure and vacuum of the crankcase....so the diaphragm is fluctuating with each RPM of the motor and they do wear out and crack...Like I said they're easy and cheap to replace...especially compared to the pumps on the 4 stroke motors....Good Luck!....
