  • 6YC Gauge Trim Calibration Speed Programming Initial Setup Questions

I just removed a F200 and replaced it with a new F250, same 6YC on the dash. Please tell me how to set the tilt/trim reading. I attempted to calibrate, but the gauge only reads full down with no change in reading when the engine is actually tilted/trimmed. When I first turned on the engine, all lines were flashing red on the trim gauge, but when I calibrated with engine in the full down position, the gauge began to read ONLY full down and again, would not provide accurate readout. Also, I have no speed reading on the 6YC. Again, all I did was plug n’ play the new F250. Thanks in advance for assistance.

here is a link to the 6YC Operation Manual

    https://www.docdroid.net/y26DTq9/6yc...ess.pdf#page=2

The 'trim calibration' is a 'fine tuning',
the engine still needs a working trim sender.
and there are several failure modes for trim senders.

Start by tilting the engine full up, get under there and examine the sender.
The swing arm of the sender may simply need to be 'freed up'
with some WD40 and physical therapy.

Or there may be wires disconnected.
    This "new F250" -
    what model? mechanical or DEC?

    As for speed -
how did the 6YC get speed when you had the F200 ?
did the 6YC display the time?

Ffairdeal thank you for the response. The F250XB is a new engine, mechanical. The swing arm seems to be moving/functioning normally, but I will lubricate it to make sure. The only wires disconnected were the main harness, and it was plug ‘n play. The speed info for the F200 came directly from the engine, no separate sending unit. I don’t recall that the 6YC displayed the time. Thanks again for your help. Toby

OK - I can make a couple more suggestions.

For the trim - its possible that the mechanical sender is fine,
but the 'jumpers' are not connected for the signal to get to the display.
Look at the wires in the front of the engine pan,
for two pink wires, wrapped in yellow electric tape, each with whitish caps:
remove the caps, and plug the wires together

          For the speed,
it appears that your F200 had a sensor
which translated the engine's lower unit speedometer pickup
to an electronic signal for the 6YC -
and the new engine does not have that.

You can purchase the sensor and install,
          but IMO,
a better source of speed (and "free")
is if you have a GPS / chartplotter with NMEA 0183 output.

Are you running a GPS/plotter ? what make & model?

Garmin 942XS. Just need instructions on how to get the Garmin info into the 6YC. Thanks again!

              OK.
So coming out the back of the 6YC is a 6 wire lead -
The white and the blue are for the GPS input.

The main cable of your Garmin -
which contains the red and black wires for power & ground -
              also has 6 smaller wires.
You need to connect the Garmin blue wire to the Yamaha white wire
and the Garmin gray wire to the Yamaha blue wire.

Then you need to go into the Garmin menu
Settings > Communications > NMEA 0183 Setup > Port Types
select Output Port and change it to "NMEA Std"

              IIRC on the 6YC,
you don't need to tell it use the GPS for speed -
              it will automatically,
              (and display the time)

Awesome! I will follow up once I’ve made the connections. Thank you again. Toby

The trim “jumper” wire was a simple fix and immediately resolved the display issue. Thanks again!8B3FF335-46E0-4739-956D-0AC71A4714F6.jpeg

The Garmin Blue and Grey wires are both currently connected to the Icom radio. Will it work if I tap onto the wires and have the Garmin Blue/Grey wires connected to both the Icom and the 6YC? The Icom harness also has the Garmin Brown and Purple wires attached, total of (4) four wires from the Garmin to the Icom. Is that required? Thanks again for your help!

                      Yes it will be fine.
a NMEA 0183 'talker' (in this case, the Garmin blue and gray)
                      can be connected to multiple "listeners';
in this case the Yamaha and the Icom.

You don't need to connect the Yamaha to the Garmin's brown and purple.
Those allow the Garmin to 'listen' to the Icom 'talk'
(if the Icom received a location broadcast from another boat,
the Garmin would display it on the chart)

But that has no application for the Yamaha display.
