Oil or fuel in exhaust 2.5hp 4 stroke

Hello all
Had difficulty pulling the starter cord
So I turned the propellor by hand in gear
Then the engine started but there was a lot of fuel or oil in the exhaust
The engine ran ok but seemed to get very hot after 10 minutes
So I stopped it and brought it back home.
Any ideas where to start on this one?
