Got a motor back from shop and it pumped water at idle then when throttled up it stopped pumping and over heated to the point of melting the plastic housing. (not a good test pilot) The shop put new gears in it last fall and it did the same thing, I drained the oil and it had a lot of brass in it and told the repair guy this, He put in a new impeller and gave it back to us and it failed again. If the thrust bushing under the pinion got chewed up for some reason could it cause the pump to fail this way? I installed a new housing and impeller and it pumps water at idle but as soon as you bring it off of idle it stops pumping. How much play should the driveshaft have without the pump on there? Thanks

Sounds like he didn't do such a hot job re-assembling if your getting lots of steel/brass filings coming out of the oil. A second failure confirms this.
If you asking re driveshaft play (spinning) its virtually nill.
Just the fact all that crap came out of there and has not been resolved.
IMO, I'd find another shop and have that LU unit pulled apart. The original issue hasn't been repaired.
Your trying to put a band aid over a broken bone..Scott
