  • 8 horsepower 4 stroke

My t8 four stroke won't return to idle after running at cruising speed. To get the rpm's down I have to take the cover off and pull the throttle lever back. I have tried adjusting the throw but nothing helps. Do you think the pulley is bad on the cable system ? Thanks, Rob

No one has any ideas about this? Thanks any way.

You are the only one that can put their hands on it to find what is binding up.
Disconnect things and see what is binding

Are you referring to the throttle cable (adjacent to the shifter cable) itself when you say "Cable system"? (Remote shifter I'm assuming?)

If so, and you have to manually pull the cable out at the engine end, sounds like the cable is rusted up,worn, etc.

You can disconnect it from the engine and try moving it and see if it moves fully back to the idle position. If it doesn't (sounds like it won't) the shifter cable is not good (or less likely, something inside the control box is amiss)

If its not a remote shifter/throttle, please post the year and model #..

It appears to me that #18 hooks up to a remote cable, correct Rob? Or as Rod posted above, is it a hand operated control, at the engine?

There's 12 different T8 models for that year

If it does, please refer back to the above post and disconnect the cable from #18 and work it(the cable) back and forth at the forward control box.

Also ascertain that #18 is NOT binding up (causing the issue), linkages broke/bent, etc..

You need to ascertain if the cable ITSELF is working/going in its full range of motion (which I suspect it isn't) or the linkages inside the engine.

it is a tiller handle which turns a cam pulling on a cable which goes through the pulley than attaches to the throttle shaft. When returning to idle it will not return to the correct rpm's without manually pulling the throttle shaft back. This is a kicker motor and a real pain bending over the transom and taking the cover off and pulling the throttle back.I hope this explains a little better. Thanks for the replies.

I would start by checking the cable, that its not frayed inside and jambing up in the outer sheath.

Next, I would start by cleaning and lubing any/all moving parts.

Old grease over time, tends to goo up and stick. Your throttle system should move very easily which it obviously isn't.

Please post what you find, the fix..
