Test wheel

I've been looking for a test wheel for my 89 200s for years. Haven't found any used ones. New, if you can get it last I checked was like $400.

My question: could one be made to get the job done by using an old aluminum prop and cutting the blades down? Granted, it might pull on my line pretty hard at the dock but I'd like to check my full throttle timing at the dock rather than hanging off the back of the boat at 40 mph.

I've only ever done static timing checks.

I am no help with the test wheel, but does your motor have mechanical timing linkage or it timing con*****ed by CDI/ECU?

Some motors you can disconnect linkage and advance it by hand at idle in neutral to where WOT would put it and check with timing light.
RPM goes up some but not very far because the throttle is not opened

years ago mercury had a chart on how to cut down and repitch various AL props to make test wheels out of them.

Mechanical timing. That's a good idea...just advance timing fully with no throttle..and check it with a light..I wonder what Rodbolt thinks of that strategy.
