Replaced water pump and went to reinstall but can't get lower unit to shift. I have the foot off the motor and the shift rod will not move up or down. There is no clicking sounds and when I spin the prop either way the drive shaft turns either way. I can't for the life of me find neutral as the shift shaft will not move either way. Please help. I'm at my wits end.

I have the manual and the know how. I just can't fathom how the shift cam could be stuck. Could it be the dog clutch? Or the spring on the end of the prop shaft? I just can't figure it out. I don't want to pull the shift cam just yet because the reinstall would be very time consuming. Any tricks you can think of to free the shift cam?

Can you post exactly what is on the engine data plate... Model and Serial number. Trying to figure out which manual is applicable to your engine. Thanks
Is this you L/U setup? http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Ya...201/parts.htmlLast edited by panasonic; 05-03-2018, 11:27 PM.

Can you get at item #53 and screw #54 down thru the hole?
I can only think that shift "wedge" at the end of the shaft is pushed down to far and is now wedged itself in place. And how that happened due to a water pump change is beyond me.
Perhaps a pair of vise grips on the part of the shaft sticking out, twisting back and fort slightly and tapping up on the vise grips will get it to pop up free?

This thread is a flashback for me. I became a member here some years ago when I had my 25hp and had similar troubles after changing water pump.
Prior to dropping the LU, what position did you have the throttle in..forward, reverse, neutral? When the engine is running the drive shaft is constantly spinning, no matter the gear. So have you tried moving shift shaft as you spin the drive shaft?

hahahaaha
let me write the scene.
you undid the barrel nut to disconnect the shift shaft.
you left the jam nut on the lower shift shaft.
while dropping the lower the jam nut hung on the midsection. that caused the shift shaft to raise and disconnect from the spring loaded shift plunger.
means the propshaft has to be removed to place the shift cam back in place.
not difficult, I see it once a month or so.
my bet is you wont do it twice.
