Yamaha stopped using model years in 2005.
The serial number you mention was manufactured in July 2012. There should be a sticker on the side of the clamp bracket that has the numbers 07/12.
Do you own the motor or are you considering buying it?
If it is on a boat, and the boat has a model year of 2013, then most titling states will consider it to be a 2013 model year motor. Although really it is not, since their are no more model year Yamaha's here in the US.

If you are a "trust but verify" sort of a guy, the next time you are at the boat dealer take a look at the right hand clamp bracket. What do you see? Or, have the dealer show you a copy of the Certificate of Origin as it will indicate the model, primary ID (serial number) and the date of manufacture.
By the way, most, if not all, of the engine makers no longer use model years. Here is what Yam has to say at their website under the FAQ section:
