Oil level check

i have a 2005 Yamaha 225 - when pulling dipstick to check oil I get widely varying readings based on engine tilt and whether it just ran. What is proper way to check oil level?

Even after years, it sometimes momentarily startles me to pull a dry dipstick out of my F225...
