  • Rookie with Yamaha trim wiring issue

I have a 2004 Hurricane 202 with a 2004 Yamaha 150 4 stroke with no trim gauge. I've bought the wire harness (part # on invoice 6R3-82553-70-00) and a gauge. My dilemma is, cannot find an empty plug to plug the harness into @ the motor. The pink/black wires from the trim switch appear to plug into a connecter with a black & off-white wire coming out then into the wire loom. Is there a place on line I can go with schematics, wiring diagram or even pictures to put this issue to bed?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks,

    EZ

Do you have a tachometer in use now? If so, what kind?

The reason why I ask is because there are two connectors in the engine pan that connect to a trim/oil harness. The color of the nylon connector is an ivory color. One of those two connectors has the trim signal.

A Yam tachometer would normally be connected to those two connectors via the trim/oil harness. This is so that low oil pressure and over temperature lights would be illuminated in the case of such as event.

Do you see two square connectors with wires coming from them that lead to your rigging grommet and on to the boat?

It may be possible that your connectors are already in use but...

      Hey Bosco99...

Thanks for your reply. The tach is Faria. There are 2 connectors each with yellow & black connector plugged into a pink and black connector. And the only empty connector has 4 ports with all yellow wires.

Up front in the engine pan, near the ten pin connector that definitely goes through the rigging grommet, are the trim/oil connectors. Here is a diagram from the service manual. The one on the left with the pink and black wires is for the trim.

You just need to keep looking. They may be buried under other stuff.

            Yamaha 150 trim gauge issue

            Bosco,

The 2 connectors I see with pink are attached with 2 wires appear to be white & black (maybe light yellow in better light) going in and 2 wires out, one pink and black and the other connector pink w/black tracer and black.

Is it possible (!) I have been given the wrong harness? Dealer says there were 2 different harnesses around the years 2004/2005. One had a double connector on the motor end and the one they gave me is a single connector. The double end harness might join in series in line with the existing connector???.
            (2) Any chance it is prewired? Sealer says doubtful!

I've added a shot of the 2 connectors I believe you want me to see.

Keep looking in the engine pan. Dig deep. You are looking for something similar to what is shown in the photo below. Sorry for the lack of quality. The connectors should be adjacent to one another.

These two connectors normally go to a different wire harness that goes to a Yamaha gauge. It carries the over temp signal, low pressure signal, water in fuel signal, trim signal, check engine signal and other information.

I am presuming that the connectors are unused and not attached to a wire harness. What stuff do you see going to the rigging grommet and on to the boat? Should be a ten pin harness, throttle and shift cables, fuel hose, etc. Do you see any other harness going to and thru the rigging grommet?

Take a photo of what goes to the rigging grommet and let us take a look.

                Yamaha 150 trim gauge issue

                Boscoe;

There is a plastic flex shield with a two wire harness running along the main shielded harness, the wires are black and pink w/black tracer. I was looking for a black w/pink set of wires.

I dug deep, only 3 nylon connectors down in the pan you described. 2 are are connected and 1 is not connected with yellowish wires into the 4 port connector.

You need to track down where the wire harness that is shown in photo number three goes.

                    Trim gauge wiring issue solved

Thanks Boscoe for your experienced advise. Turns out my Hurricane Gs202 was prewired to a Faria gauge, the wire's color changed somewhere in the wire harness. It took some time to locate, but as you said, "KEEP DIGGING"!
                    I needed that push!!

Thanks again for taking your time to help a rookie .....EzGoinFlGuy
