  • Connecting battery to mystery 90hp

I would be most grateful if someone could point out to this forum newbie where I am supposed to connect the battery + and - cables to in this picture of my newly acquired Yamaha 90hp outboard.

From the wiring diagram I have identified these possible locations which I have numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4, however, neither (apart from 4) have much if any room on the post. 4 seems to be a common earth connected directly to the starter motor on the other side of the engine, and I am pretty certain that this is a reasonable location for the negative, but can anyone help me with the positive?

If anyone can identify what year / model this engine is, I would also be most grateful as it would be much easier for parts. All serial numbers are missing as far as I can tell. By process of elimination, I think it must be early to mid 90s and parts for that era I have bought so far have fitted well.

    Many thanks in advance

#1 is your positive. It appears there's already a battery cable already attached under the rubber cover.

As for the ground, I can't tell in the picture but it should just be a similar sized lug DIRECT to the BLOCK (not the cowling, etc) *If you follow that positive cable back, it should eventually attach to (side by side) to another large cable(a heavy, double cable wire), that would be the ground. Follow that back up to where it attaches to the block and that's your ground lug

a closer picture may help if that doesn't pan out..

Thanks for the advice. The heavy duty cable on the left of number 1 goes directly to the starter motor. I assume the battery goes on the opposite post and that this is the starter motor relay?

I will take a closer picture later today if possible.

picture 1, where the lug is that also has the power trim positive wire, that is where the positive battery cable attachs.

the negative cable typically goes to an 8mm threaded hole on the starter bracket.

if its a US market motor.
last of the stand alone CDI boxes with screw terminals was 92 for the US market.
