Hi Guy`s im after a littkle help ive a mariner /Yamaha 40 HP fitted to my boat and its stopped charging ive taken it too the local yam dealers who have had young lad look at it (so called marine engineer) who tells me he as never seen a Yam?mariner fitted with a rectifier And a voltage regulator as STD the Engine ran great befour this Lad had a look at it he as swopped some wires over and now it spits back through one of the carbs ive taken my engine back so he can put things right but he says that i need a new ENGINE so what id like to know is how do i check the wiring from the Stator ive two green wires now where do these wires go to the Rectifier or the voltage Regulator ? this is how it is wired up now from the stator two green both go into the Rectifier coming out the is a RED wire this now goes into a PURPLE wire then goes into the Regulator PURPLE out into a RED under the flywheel ? the Engine is still not charging the on board Battery as ive a volt meter on the dash and also i have battery tester that ive used on my car checking on the car it reads 14.2 volts on the boat same metet reads 12.3volts any know how i put the wiring back to STD the next marine engineer is over 50 miles away i did buy a manual but it does say some engines where fitted with a rectifier and voltage regulator as STD but there is no wiring diagram full engine number is ( 6E9 L432082 ) im lead to Beleave its a 1982 regards Alain

Two green wires from stator connect rectifier, red wire fro rectifier connect to starter relay positive battery post.
Spitting back through carb is sign of lean running condition and nothing to do with charging circuit, may need to clean and sync carbs.

6E9 Mariner
Not Sure your right on the carbs need a clean Engine Ran Great Before the (LAD) took wires off any idea how many volts the stator should kick out also does the Electric current only flow in one way on the voltage regulator also need to know the voltage output of regulator i can feed 12v in but only get 2.1/2 Volts out Part Number (95845 4585 ) wish id found this site before id taken my engine to the local (useless) mariner dealers regards Alain

You need to find a service manual for your motor and then follow the steps in it for testing the charging system with the proper test equipment (Peak reading meter or a DVA adapter with regular meter), which you more than likely do not have.
this will head you in the right direction
12vDC into it is not one of the tests
Does this motor have a choke or the prime start system for enrichment while cold?

yam/mariner
Hi 99yam40 the choke as a manuel and a electirc one its also manuel & electric start bought a manuel the is supposed to cover my engine it menions some engines had the seprate rectifiers and voltage regulators but show no wierring diagram reg as 5 wires two green one red & black the black goes to ground the two green plug into the two green comming out the stator and i think the Red goes down to one side of the voltage Regulator which as two ternimals then from the other side the wire goes back into a red that goes into the wirering loom can you only test the V/Reg with A/C Power going in regards Alain

from the stator to the rectifier its AC voltage.
the rectifier "Rectifies" the sine wave into a pulsed DC.
no DC inputs to the regulator or rectifier.
usually its a combined unit.
its really simple to test.
start the motor, check stator inputs, check regulator output.
