  • New F70A - several tech questions - parts+rigging

Hello all. Please could you guys help with some tech questions. I have owned several yamahas before. Last week I got a brand new F70A on a Novurania rib, for use as a yacht tender. I'm in europe but my Yamaha is US-supplied because Novurania fitted it to the boat then shipped the whole thing to me in a container.

    1. The scheduled maintenance chart in the sticky thread at top of this forum says, in relation to the timing belt, "inspect/replace as necessary" every 100hrs and "change" every 1000 hours. What does this mean? At 100 hours, do you just take a look, and if no wear is visible you don't replace it?

    2. I was trying to buy engine oil filters online at boats.net but two oil filters (item #11) are mentioned on the parts list, with similar but different part numbers. Which one do I buy? How am I supposed to know!

    3. Does the speed sensor (60V-8A4L1-11-00, , the one than works off the pitot tube) connect to and use up one of the device ports (white) on the multihub? Or does it connect somewhere else? I'm asking because all three of my device ports are used up (Y-Cop, 2x gauges) so if the speed sensor needs a device port I need to buy another multihub and extend the network's backbone, so to speak

    4. The install instructions for Y-Cop, 6YB-28107-90, page 11/section 5, give instructions on registering the key fobs. Steps 3 and 6 say turn the "main switch" off and on. What is the "main switch"? Is it just the first click of the ignition key? Or the battery isolator switch?

    5. I have the flush mount premium remote control unit (mechanical) pictured below. It is mounted on the starboard face of my (small) console/dash unit, so it's in the skipper's right hand. This means it mounted kinda the wrong way round, and therefore the trim up/down switch can't be operated by your thumb. You have to use your little finger. Does anyone sell a kit, either Yamaha or some other customisation kit, to get the trim switch on the other side of the lever so I can operate it with the thumb of my right hand?

Sorry about so many questions on a first post. Really helpful informative forum, thanks, and I look forward to making any contribution I can and shopping on boats.net

and this is why, thank someone, loose engine sales are banned by yamaha in the states.
I cant answer your questions as its a non US market engine.
but thats why for US market stuff you MUST use a dealer.

Rodbolt- OP stated that it is a US rigged boat, shipped overseas. That boat was built, rigged and crated right here in Ft.Pierce, FL. Would that still be a motor for the European market? Are there enough differences in the motors for the teo markets that these rigging questions are unanswerable? I'm not trying to flame here, just curious. Thanks.

add the speed sensor and it plugs into the engine harness, gray connector marked S.
now it will display speed on a command link speedo.
yes inspect the belt visually for wear every 100 hours.

the main switch is the key switch, they are directing you to turn the ignition on without starting the engine.

on the trim switch your stuck with what you have.
the flush mount box was designed for stbd side hull rigging.

on the filters, what part number did you come up with?

5GH-13440-20-00 is the correct oil filter for your engine, can use either one just one slightly longer than other one.

Thanks everyone for all that info.

Rodbolt17 and splinded, I don't get your comments on US market/use of dealer etc. I just want a tender for a new yacht and the one I picked based on its spec is a Novurania, which as you might know is made in Florida. I live in UK. There is no UK dealer for Nourania, and I think they only have one European dealership in France near Nice/Monaco, about 1000miles from where I live. So I spoke to Novurania and they said they'd build me a boat and rig it with F70A, shrink wrap it, and put it in a container to UK. That's that they did, and the thing arrived a couple of weeks ago. It's fully rigged and turn key. Novu warned me that I may not have any Yamaha warranty within Europe but I couldn't care less about that - I'll likely put <150hrs on this motor and I'll just pay for repairs, which will most likely be $0.00 anyway . So, er, I'm feeling pretty innocent and trying to figure out what I've done wrong! Hey, I just contributed $30k to your economy by giving an export sale to the nice guys at Novurania - you should be buying me a virtual beer surely? Anyway, thanks for the tech help; it's much appreciated

I believe Rodbolt17 made a mistake on his 1st post, not knowing where it was rigged out at
and Splinded is just a spammer of some kind so pay no attention to his post

I would contact the ones that rigged it out for you and maybe they will send you the correct control unit if there is one

or move it to the other side of console and operate with other hand

It is a shame the would rig it like that with all the money you spent

you may wish to purchase various spare parts, maybe the VST chamber gasket and other essentials for dealing with contaminated/poor quality gasolines.
some motors differ in specs from a US market yamaha as opposed to an engine built for the international market.
some US marinized sterndrive stuff is not allowed in europe.
2 years ago I was in Rio Chico VE, working on an sx250AETO.
was told it was identical to our SX250TXRW.
                wrong.
that OX66 250 used the 66K VST filter and had NO O2 sensor.
that would mean the ECU is different also.
keep your engine model number and production date code handy for any parts ordering.

two biggest issues we have with tender engines, cooling system failures and fuel system failures.
both typically due to lack of use or improper flushing.

the F70,so far, has been a solid performer.
it will die from neglect like anyother motor.

Thanks guys for the advice. And thanks Rodbolt for the info that the F70 has proved to be a solid performer. That's good to know. I'll be nice to it and flush it often, and run it at least once a month in the off season, and every few days of course in summer.

On the throttle lever thing, I prefer it in my right hand so I'll leave it there and just get a custom made arrangement to put a trim switch on the thumb side. I'm away from the boat for a couple of weeks so cannot CAD this up right now, but I'll do that in a while and get it machined out of st/steel or plastic block or something. If the issue is widespread I'll post pics of result, in a while

Treat/stabilize the fuel for long term non use or even all the time and make sure they installed water separator/ filter on hull before it gets to motor.
Running often with good/fresh fuel is always best.

Wish I had the money for a new Yacht but not sure I would spend it on that. Enjoy life the best way you can.

Thanks; willdo. I use the boat a lot so the fuel is always fresh, except in winter of course. I'll try the Yam fuel conditioner. Yes, Nuvurania have fitted a fuel separator/filter in the fuel line, on a bracket inside the transom. Just fyi and apropos nothing really, here is a pic of the yacht tender. I haven't run it yet as the mother ship wont be delivered till April, and in meantime I'm having the dashboard re-made

Good looking rig, looks like it should move well with the 70
