I have had this motor since new. Over the last few years, when I start it, I let it warm up for a minute and then try to accelerate to plane. The motor seems to be running on two of three cylinders until I get almost on plane and then something kicks in and away I go. This is obviously an electrical problem. How could a commoner like me determine if this is a coil problem or cdi problem with going to a service shop? Spark plugs are brand new

Pick up a Yamaha service manual for your motor is the best way to get the info for testing ignition system and you will need a DVA adapter and regular meter or special meter.
Here is some good reading on testing, but the manual will be best
CDI Electronics Practical Outboard Ignition Troubleshooting
Might check to see if fuel pump is leaking into #3 crankcase also

Hi!
I do own a 1995 30D (3 cylinder) and sometimes do exactly the same!
I heard that is "normal"? and happen on most 3 cylinders yamaha? Not sure!
Never asked a professional answer because that does not worry me much.
A friend had a 90 2 stroke did the same you reported however I had a 60Feto and I don't remenber have this issue.
Good luck.
