Trouble getting out of gear

Hi,
i recently had an issue with my 2006 f150, it had been a little over a month since i had her out. she went into gear just fine but was very difficult to get out of gear. it basically skipped neutral and went to reverse. this only happened a few times but when it did it sounded like the rpm's were higher than usual.

i had her out yesterday and the problem did not repeat itself.

i was speaking to a mechanic and he said it could be either a cable issue or a faulty shift interrupt switch.

any ideas on what might have caused this?

either the cable is failing the shift inturrupt switch is failing or something else is failing causing the engine to default to an 1100 RPM idle.
