  • 200 Yamaha sw 2 series died

    Hello,

I was out the other day after my engine rebuild from the dealer and I had a problem. He installed a gauge on my boat and left both batteries on. I had a tough time starting her up but the engine finally turned over. I was going through the canals out to the bay at 700 rpm and was putting along. When it was time to open her up the boat wouldn't jump on plane. After punching it a few times on the throttle I was up cruising for 10 minutes at 5000 rpms and went to idle down as I had to get out of the Chanel to my destination. At low rpms the engine bogged down and stalled out. I kept trying to restart the engine up and it would turn over and stal again. I believe the batteries were dead and wasn't running hard enough to get a good charge on them. I threw my anchor and called sea tow. They tried to jump the batteries and Nadda. After a half hour we got the engine to crank over with it in neutral and at 4000 rpms. Engine sounded perfect. But as soon as we let off the throttle down to idle it stalls out. Plenty of fuel, primer bulb got hard. It was just out of the mechanics hands for a top assembly rebuild and added oil injectors as well.

What can cause the boat not to get up on plane and after running for it to just die out? I just spent 2600 on the top rebuild.

It's back at the marina so I can't test anything however I am wondering what could have created this problem I am new to boating. 98 Yamaha 200 sw 2 series.

    back at the marina.
    best place for it now.
ask them when its ready to take you on a sea trial.
    still sounds like fuel contamination.

Thats what I'm thinking. Do the batteries have anything to do with it?

It's so annoying to have a boat and not be able to use it. I'm 2 for 2 with being towed in lol. I had to premix the oil and gas before he hooked up the oil injection. Can old oil:gas premix cause a problem that is still in tank? When he sea trialed it when he was done he said it all ran great.

        he said,she said, they said.
next time its done ask them to take you for a seatrial of at least 30 minutes at varying speeds.
that engine needs 12V to the ecm for proper operation, however it will run without the battery at all.

Thank you! I will make sure of that. Another day in Naples fl at the pool and not on a boat

Yes old fuel can be a problem.

Did they give you instructions on how to break the rebuilt motor in properly?

No instructions were given. The problem about a month ago related to 3 of the 6 pistons seized. There was no oil injection hooked up from the previous owner causing a premix of 50:1. The mechanic who is very well respected and has been doing this for many years installed an oil injection kit and a top powerhead assembly for the rebuild of the engine. When i asked if it was ready he said that it was good to go and the engine is rebuilt and should have no problems running lean/etc. Before i got the boat and picked it up i asked him to install the gauge that the owner before me had purchased. When i went to the dock, both batteries were clicked on and there was almost no turn over on the ignition to the engine. After a few tries and choking it, the engine started up, had some white smoke and i let it sit for a minute or two at idle. Threw it in reverse and i was on my way to my boat slip. No wake for about 20 minutes until i got into the naples bay and was ready to cruise 25 MPH. When i hit the throttle down, the boat wouldn't plane. It was just me on it. So i backed off and punched it, finally got it up on plane. When i was heading out of the channel and into the canals where my slip is, i slowed the throttle, and was going under 1000 rpms, motor was still pissing, but the boat didn't seem like it wanted to move in gear. I put it in neutral and it bogged down to stall. Now that the batteries were already dead after a few turns on the key, it started and died, whether giving it gas, priming the bulb and what not.

Even the sea tow guy tried jumping it and the motor would only turn over while feathering the throttle in neutral, low RPM and putt, putt...putt. The next day the mechanic said that the batteries wouldn't hold a charge and needed to get a new casing for it or wiring casing for it. I don't think that is the problem. with a rebuild, installing the oil injector he was not only in the motor but around that area where the batteries are. I don't understand why i am having all of these issues. I have zero confidence in this boat and i am afraid to take my wife and kids out on it in fear of getting stuck again.

All of his work is under warranty, but from what I have read it can be the fuel, carbs or anything in between. I am assuming that there is no more than 5 gallons of premix fuel but on thursday of last week i put 10 gallons of 87 octane in.

Whats your advice on a break in? RUn it ilke i stole it?

You need to ask about the break in of the new rebuild.

Most call for double oil and certain RPM restrictions for the first hours of break in

I have no idea what "needed to get a new casing for it or wiring casing for it" means

Did they tell you what caused the 3 pistons to fail? Lean fuel/air ratio?
What did they do to fix the problem so it would not happen again on the rebuild?

The battery wiring was corroded I believe. I work a lot so it's hard for me to talk to this guy and my wife relays me the info in her words. I am going to ask him for a sea trial when he is done. If there were break in restrictions I would assume he would tell me. Once its up and running im going to sell it and buy a new boat. I can't go on knowing the boat is going to have issues. How would I control oil flow if it's automatic?

Sometimes they adjust the oil linkage rich, sometimes you add oil to fuel for 1st few tanks to go with the self oiler.
Talk to them, they may think you know what to do, and you do not.
