I replaced the plugs, it tried to run but hitting on only one cylinder, died, water pump worked fine, new plugs no help. I was using fresh gas. Any idea what to try next

After cranking, pull the spark plugs and check to see if their wet with fuel. They should be.
While their out, connect them, one at a time to the spark plug wire and ground the plug to the block. Crank it over and check for a healthy spark(repeat with all cylinders).
If the motors been sitting with fuel in it for sometime with no fuel additive, the carb(s) likely clogged up and will need dipping (carb cleaning) or pull the float bowl and clean the idle and main jets.. You can drain the float bowl and catch the fuel in a container. Check for debris, water, etc.. Flush by squeezing the primer bulb...

Somewhat red faced I discovered that the fuel line was not fully seated on the portable tank, no gas, no run. I seated it properly and she popped right off. happy days...
