Need to run a compression test first to see all cylinders are even and listen for a knock when engine is running(knock sensor with retard timing).
A cough is a sign of lean running condition, plugged jets in carbs or air leak on intake, need to run a fuel vacumn and pressure test to see have a fuel restriction.

Unplugging sensors wont help troubleshoot at all, it doesn't mean TPS is good or bad. Test each sensor as per service manual to see if within specs. Still need to check fuel system.

many many things you need to check.
thats where the diagnostic test light is invaluable.
it will quickly rule out most of the sensors.
draw back is no automatic oil transfer while its hooked up and the troble code MUST be active to read a code.
however it sounds like a fuel issue.
if the knock sensor triggers timing is fixed at either TDC or 7* BTDC.
wont release until the engine is returned to idle speed.
the knock sensor uses an a/c signal on a 5vDC reference.
unplug it and the ECU will know and lock the timing.
a stuck open t-stat will cause #6 carb to run dry.
