Lower unit ....neutral problem?

I have a 1992 55h.p. Yamaha outboard. I took the lower unit off and replaced impellar. I made sure both remote and unit were in neutral. When I reassembled the motor the propellar turns when trying to start motor. I took lower unit back off and I can turn the propellar by hand and the drive shaft does not turn when I turn the propellar clockwise but does make a loud clunking noise and I can feel the shift rod move. When I try to turn the propellar CCW it will not turn at all. I can turn the drive shaft by hand and the propellar will turn with no problem either way. Whats wrong? Is it in gear and I just need to fins neutral? Doesn"t sound like the usual neutral problem. Shift rod adjustment? Please help.

Sounds like you need to shift lower unit to neutral before installing.
Is it a push/pull or twist?
Either way you need to grab it with visegrip pliers and move until it is in neutral
