I have a 1987, 4 stroke, 9.9 HP outboard that starts and runs fine up to about 1000 RPM, then drops to idle speed, smokes and almost stalls. I have cleaned the carb thoroughly and replaced the plugs, but no improvement. I found the oil pressure indicator inoperative and it shows to be open. The oil pressure switch appears to open and closes properly. Could the lack of the oil indicator in the circuit be causing my problem? Is this indicator the item listed in most parts inventories as, "pilot lamp ass'y, #6G8-83582-01-00"? If the oil indicator is not the problem, what might it be?

No oil sending unit would not cause that if the oil pressure is ok the green light will be on( no green light no oil pressure). Check compression, if it is smoking the rings or cyl may be worn. If thats ok then back to carb flooding out will cause it to smoke float valve or choke system not working properly
